Special surprise, another guest webcomic for you! Sorta. This one is a “blind date” arranged by Webcomic Beacon where they pair an artist with a writer and give them a theme and let them loose on each other. Luckily I was paired with Kari Mareen – (who provided the writing) of the strip: http://www.masseycollege.ca/
Here’s her explanation on the strips fairy tale basis:
Panel 2: a version of “The Frog King.” Actually, many versions of this tale end with the girl cutting off the frog’s head, but my favourite is called “The Well of the World’s End,” and you can find it here: http://www.authorama.com/
Panel 3: Again, this is a common tale type; an easily accessible version is the Grimm Brothers’ “All Fur” or “All-Kinds-of-Fur”: http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/
Panel 4; That would be the Grimms’ “The Brave Little Tailor”: http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/
Panel 5: This is a Russian story called “Vasilisa the Beautiful”: http://www.oldrussia.net/vas.
And we have a song to go with it! Kari’s a multi-faceted creator and built a song to go with our strip. Wow. That’s dedication. Go to her site and make sure you let her know Death At Your Door sent you.

Diggin’ it Rod! You make any story look good, and this one had good written all over it! You keep it interesting by moving us around, giving great reactions, interesting and effective staging.
I used to be mildly confused on the location and geography of Toronto. Seems like on MASH, Corporal Klinger was a Toronto Blue Jays fan. I couldn’t figure out how he was in the US Army if he was from Toronto. But as a kid, I also got Toronto and Toledo (where he was from) confused. Probably not helping my case much here. But I get that Toronto (torontoledo?) is distinctly Canadian in identity. One day I’d love to travel there.
Just a warning, in case you go anywhere in Canada besides Toronto, a good way to tick off the rest of Canada is to say that Toronto is typical of what makes up Canada.
Absolutely. I’m actually originally from Vancouver, so if anyone would like to lob insults at Toronto, I’ll stand back and cheer you on.
I’ve only ever been to Montreal, for a few days back in ’98 (last century). I get the impression that attempting to generalize anything Canadian (outside stuff like health care) is highly inaccurate. My sense (as a very poorly traveled dude) is that each of the provinces has their own identity and culture.
But I’m never afraid to invite trouble. My favorite way is to spell your country “Canadia”. Since you speak Canadian, after all…
Canada is the mutt of nations, yep.
.
Canadia… heheh, hadn’t heard that one, that’s pretty good, (coming from a guy who can’t pronounce zed properly
zed. Is that the past tense of z? as in “to sleep”?
“zed until 10:30 this morning.”
end of the week. My mind is pitted and scarred. goofy ideas abound.
